Biography

Dr. Hun Chung is an Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Department of Quantitative Theory and Methods at Emory University. Prior to joining Emory University, he was a Full Professor (with tenure) in the Faculty of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan.

Hun Chung works at the intersection of Political Philosophy and Formal Theory (Game/Social Choice Theory). In short, PPE (Philosophy, Politics, & Economics).

Specifically, Hun Chung constructs analytic formal models (utilizing the tools of game/social choice theory) to derive important normative insights that may help answer foundational questions in democratic theory, distributive justice, political/democratic legitimacy, political stability, liberal rights, and the interpretation of major figures in the history of political philosophy.

Research

Any normative political theory presumes an understanding of the positive processes of its proposed institutional arrangements. As such, Dr. Chung believes that formal theory (viz. game theory or social choice theory), by offering a better understanding of the positive processes of different kinds of political institutions, can greatly help the normative theorizing of political theorists by showing what can and what cannot be realistically achieved from the practical implementation of their proposed political theory. Formal theory can also help us clarify the precise logical relationships between fundamental  normative concepts and, thereby, allow us to understand which set of normative concepts can be coherently endorsed without committing any logical inconsistencies.

Hun Chung's work has been published in various journals such as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Journal of Theoretical Politics, Journal of Philosophy, Philosophical Studies, Analysis, Journal of the American Philosophical Association, Economics and Philosophy, Synthese, Erkenntnis, Episteme, Ethical Perspectives, etc.
