Degree Option FAQ

  • I have AP Statistics credit. Can this credit count towards a QTM major or minor?

    No. Students who receive a 4 or 5 on the AP Statistics exam may receive general credit towards the 124 academic hours for graduation; however, the course does not substitute for QTM 100 or any requirements for QTM degree options.

  • Does QTM offer any STEM majors?

    Yes, Quantitative Sciences (QSS), Applied Mathematics and Statistics (AMS), and QSS + Business Administration are STEM majors. Public Policy Analysis (PPA) is not a STEM major.

  • What degree will I receive if I take a QTM major?

    AMS, PPA, and QSS are Bachelor of Science degrees. The QSS+BBA major is a Bachelor's of Business Administration. We do not offer any Bachelor of Arts degrees.

  • Can I count courses toward my QTM major/minor if I take them S/U (satisfactory/unsatisfactory)?

    No. All courses taken to satisfy your major or minor requirements must be taken for a grade. Classes taken S/U will not count towards satisfying your major or minor requirements.

  • How many courses / credit hours do I need to complete a QTM major?

    The required number of credit hours for any QTM major is 50+.

    • AMS major: 20 courses/54+ credit hours
    • PPA major: 17 courses/51+ credit hours
    • QSS major: 15+ courses/50+ credit hours

  • Where can I declare a QTM major or minor?

    You can declare a QTM major or minor any time after your first semester freshman year. The declaration form is online here. Once you declare online, you will need to schedule a declaration/initial advising appointment with QTM Program Coordinator Sadie Hannans.

    QTM degree programs can be complex, so it is crucial to get advice starting from day one. Your declaration will not be processed until after you meet with the QTM Program Coordinator.

  • If I declare a QTM major, can I double major in another subject as well? Will the same courses count toward both majors?

    • By College policy, Emory students can complete one major, two majors, or one major and one minor.
    • You can only double count two courses between any two majors or between a major and a minor. That means that if you pursue an AMS and a Political Science major, a maximum of two courses between these two majors can overlap.
    • A number of double majors may not be allowed because their requirements overlap too much. Check with your faculty advisor or QTM Program Coordinator Sadie Hannans (E: sadie.marie.hannans@emory.edu) to ensure your double major is allowed.
    • Double majoring can affect your ability to graduate on time; you will need to map out your schedule carefully to ensure you can complete two majors in four years.

  • Will I graduate in time if I pursue a QTM major?

    Every course of study is different. We'll sit down with you and review your particular plan so that you know what to expect. Be sure to get regular advising (once per semester) in order to make sure you are on track to meet your graduation goals.

  • How can I participate in an honors program if I am a QTM major?

  • I satisfied all the QTM major requirements and I don't have 50 credits. Can I still graduate?

    You will need to take additional QTM or track courses to graduate. Emory requires a minimum of 50 credits to graduate with a B.S. in Quantitative Sciences.

  • I want to pursue a QSS track that isn't currently offered!

    If you’re interested in a disciplinary field not on this list, contact us to discuss it. 

  • What kind of disciplinary (track) courses will I take? Once I choose a track, what track courses am I required to take? Guidelines / Limitations

    Some tracks are defined (have specific courses required), others are undefined (do not have specific courses required). 

    • For undefined tracks, QSS majors may take no more than two disciplinary courses at the 100-level. Remaining courses must be at the 200-, 300-, or 400-level, with at least one of those courses being taken at the 300- or 400-level.
    • For undefined tracks or undefined parts of tracks in QSS, any course that is accepted as a major course in the home department's degree programs is also accepted as a disciplinary track course. For example, if you pursue the Sociology track, any SOC course that is considered a part of the Sociology major is considered an acceptable course in the Sociology track. For any SOC course that is not considered a Sociology major course, it is similarly not considered a Sociology track course option in QSS. 

    Other than those requirements, what courses you take are up to you! Keep in mind that any course prerequisites still apply, and that we have no control over restrictions set by other departments. 

  • I chose a QSS track, but I need help choosing track courses. What do you recommend I take?

    The best resource for track courses is your QSS track advisor. You can view your advisor on OPUS. We compiled a list of disciplinary courses with a quantitative component that may be of interest to you, but this list should not substitute for regular advising!

  • I want to take a course for my QSS track, but the course isn't offered my track's department. Can I still take the course to fulfill a track requirement?

    If the department in question accepts the course as one of their major courses or as an equivalent course, we will accept the course. We defer to the home department for each disciplinary track. For example, if you want to see if SOC 9999: Social Psychology will count towards your QSS-Psychology track, consult the Psychology department to see if they would permit the class to count toward a Psychology major. If they approve it, QTM will approve it for your track.

  • How does the BBA + secondary Quantitative Sciences major differ from just double majoring in BBA and QSS?

    The BBA+QSS program is functionally a QSS major with a BUS track.

    • However, the BBA+QSS co-major can only be declared by students already admitted to the Business School. A regular QSS major (i.e., with an Emory College track, such as Psychology, Economics, etc.) may be declared by any student at Emory University. 
    • If a student wants to pursue a double major with the BBA and a QSS major with a College track, this would require an additional set of electives in the College track. Please note that a double major in BBA and QSS with a college track does not require extra business courses.

  • Can I declare a BBA+QSS major before I am accepted to the Business School (i.e., while I am still a student in Emory College)?

    No. However, we encourage students who intend to pursue this course of study to declare a QSS major as soon as possible, prior to admission to the BBA program. We cannot stress how important it is to declare QSS early. 

    A number of our courses, particularly our electives, allow enrollment 'by department permission' only. If you do not declare a QSS major, it may be more difficult for you to enroll in QTM courses.

  • Once I enroll in the Business School, how do I declare a BBA+QSS major?

    Because BBA+QSS is a co-major offered through the Business School, you can declare it like you would any other double major in the Business School. Follow these steps:

    1. Pick up a "Declaration of Second Major" form from the BBA Program Office (Room 307 East)
    2. Fill out and sign the form.
    3. Have a department administrator from QTM (Sadie Hannans or Dr. Lewandowski) countersign the form. They will scan/copy the form for departmental record-keeping purposes.
    4. Copy or a scan the form for your personal records. Do not skip this step - always keep copies for your personal records.
    5. Bring your completed form to the Goizueta Registrar's Office (RM 453 East)

  • If I complete the BBA+QSS program will I earn a BS and a BBA degree?

    No. Like any other double major at Emory, you will earn one degree that matches your primary course of study. As a student in Goizueta Business School, your primary course of study is Business, and therefore your degree degree will be a Bachelor's of Business Administration (BBA). On your transcript, your course of study will appear as a BBA+QSS co-major.

  • Does intent to declare a BBA+QSS major guarantee me acceptance or give me preference when applying to the Business School?

    Admission to Goizueta is based on the the admissions requirements laid out on the Business School's website; no special preference is given to students intending to declare a BBA+QSS track. 

    The advantage of starting on the BBA+QSS path early is that students can comfortably complete a full QSS major if they do not matriculate to the Business School.

  • How many courses do I need to complete the secondary QSS major?

    The secondary major in QSS requires completion of: CALC I, Linear Algebra, Advanced Calculus for Data Sciences, eight QTM courses, and a series of BBA core and elective courses. These requirements are in addition to the standard BBA program requirements. Contact your BBA advisor for questions the BBA requirements.

  • Will I graduate in time if I pursue the BBA+QSS major?

    The BBA + secondary QSS major is a rigorous course of study that requires early and careful planning if you wish to graduate in four years. We provide example schedules for freshman or sophomore students considering this program.

    That said, every student is different. You should sit down with both QTM and BBA advisors before embarking on this plan of study and should seek regular advising to ensure you stay on track.

  • What kind of BUS courses will I take for the BBA+QSS major?

    In addition to the BBA program requirements, you will take business electives towards the secondary QSS major in your area of interest. To determine exactly what BUS courses you need to take, you must consult with a BBA advisor.
